2007 Season in Review

Panthers Reach Skyline Semifinals
Lopez Named Skyline’s Top Rookie

Purchase, NY – In the college’s first season in the highly competitive Skyline Conference, the Purchase women’s tennis team nearly reached the league finals, falling 6-3 to No. 2 seeded St. Joseph’s – Patchogue in the semifinals.

The No. 3 seeded Panthers got to the semis after defeating the No. 6 seeded Russell Sage Gators 6-3 in the quarters. The Panthers, who finished the season 14-3, including a 6-1 record in conference play, found themselves collecting a number of postseason honors to go with their great run.

Rookie Melanie Lopez (FR/Brooklyn, NY) finished the season 12-4 in singles play, collecting Skyline Conference Co-Rookie of the Year honors as well as earning a place on the All-Skyline First Team.

Lopez was joined in doubles by co-captain Margo Van Hoy (SR/Beacon, NY). The duo was strong throughout the season, finishing with a record of 12-5 overall, including a 5-1 record in conference play. To her credit, Van Hoy earned a spot on the Skyline Conference Honor Roll multiple times.

Lopez and Van Hoy were not the only members of the team to be honored this fall. Tatyana de Muns (SO/Boiceville, NY) was named Skyline Conference Player of the Week, while Jennifer Cruttenden (FR/Watkins Glen, NY) garnered Rookie of the Week honors. Kernita Sylvester (JR/Bronx, NY) was also honored this season, earning a place on the Honor Roll for her spectacular play one week.

Under coach Peter Nestel, the Panthers have shown tremendous growth – something they look to build on next fall.
