CDAUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Complete your registration and send it with a CD of yourself playing with either a live rhythm section or a play-along recorded accompaniment. Returning students: please submit a new CD demonstrating your current skills. Your recording should not exceed 10 minutes total and should include the following:

  • Horns: Play the melody and improvise a solo on a 12-bar blues of your choice and also on one standard, such as “All the Things You Are,” “There is No Greater Love,” or “Stella by Starlight.”
  • Pianists and Guitarists: Follow the horn requirements above and include a sample of your “comping” (accompaniment) on each selection.
  • Bassists: Follow the horn requirements above and include a sample of your “walking” bass lines on each selection.
  • Drummers: In lieu of the requirements above, demonstrate your ability to play time in the following styles: 4/4 swing, bossa nova, jazz waltz, and jazz samba.

Sorry, there are no provisions for vocalists at this time.

ACCEPTANCE

Upon notification from the Jazz Studies Program of the decision to accept you/your child to the Summer Jazz Institute, the Office of Youth Programs in the Arts will notify you by phone and by mail and will send you an orientation package. The mailing includes a record of your deposit, your balance due, a request for required medical information, and the program schedule.

If the positions in your instrument area have been filled, we will inform you that your name has been placed on a waiting list. The office will date and hold your application, including your deposit, until the program begins or a spot opens up. It’s important to apply early!
