We are pleased to announce the start of this year’s selection process for Junior Faculty Development Awards. Faculty selected are offered a semester’s leave at full salary during which they are released from all teaching and service obligations to the College. The conditions of eligibility, process of application, and method of selection are outlined in the guidelines below.
Junior faculty often assume such heavy responsibilities for teaching and service that their scholarly or artistic development may be impeded at just the moment in their careers when renewal and tenure decisions require evidence of significant achievement. These awards are, in effect, intramural fellowships that provide an opportunity for junior, untenured faculty to concentrate exclusively on advancing or completing an important professional or scholarly project.
This program is an important opportunity for the advancement of our junior faculty, and we encourage all who are eligible, including prior candidates, to apply. Completed applications must be submitted electronically to Els van den Bosch in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs no later than February 8, 2009. We regret that late, incomplete, or ineligible applications will have to be returned.
Guidelines for Purchase College
Junior Faculty Development Awards
1. Conditions
- Each year, awards of released time are granted to two Purchase College junior faculty members. These awards are meant to provide time for complete concentration on a significant scholarly, creative, or teaching project.
- The duration of the award is one semester. Those designated receive Title F leave, retain full faculty status, salary, and rights, but are exempted from all instructional and service obligations.
- The awards are contingent upon the approval of the chancellor for Title F leave, as recommended by the president. Such approval is normally given.
- Upon return to regular service, those who have held the awards must submit a report of their accomplishments.
2. Eligibility
- Untenured full-time faculty members in any unit of the College in the rank of Instructor, or Assistant Professor, or equivalent Library ranks, are eligible to apply. Minimum prior full-time service of two academic years at Purchase College is required at the time of application, or candidates must be in the fourth semester of service at the College and have received notice of reappointment before they apply.
- Any meritorious project representative of the faculty member's professional interests and activities is eligible for submission. This includes the entire range of scholarly research, a creative or artistic work, the formulation of a new component of the curriculum requiring the synthesis or acquisition of further knowledge, and/or the evaluation and improvement of instruction either within a discipline or across disciplines. Projects that enhance the relationship between the fine arts and the liberal arts are especially welcome.
- Projects that represent the completion of work for the doctoral or other academic degrees are not eligible.
3. Application
- Please note: The Faculty Professional Standards and Awards Committee requires that faculty indicate their rank, tenure, and full-time or part-time status on all applications.
- Each application should consist of a full description of the proposed project, including a statement of its significance to the individual’s professional development and role in the College. The anticipated results of the project should be clearly defined, with a discussion of their scholarly, artistic, and/or pedagogical importance. A timetable of activities, a statement on the need for released time to make substantial progress, a current vita, and any other appropriate documentation should be attached. Applicants are encouraged to submit samples of their previous work or work in progress as well as two letters of recommendation or support from external referees.
- There is no standard format for applications. They may emulate the practice for such recognized competitions as the Guggenheim, ACLS, NEA, NEH, SSRC, and NSF, or they may assume an independent and self-designed form.
- Each applicant must secure a statement of endorsement from their dean. The dean's endorsement must verify that the applicant meets the eligibility requirements.
- Awards may be used for either the fall or spring semester of the 2009–2010 academic year. The details of the annual competition are announced each Aug. or Sept. for the following academic year.
4. Selection Process
- Recipients of the award are chosen in a competition conducted by the Faculty Professional Standards and Awards Committee. The panel represents a range of disciplines, as reflected in the total curriculum of Purchase College.
- From the nominations submitted by the faculty referees, the provost will select the winners and announce them to the campus.
