Purchase, NY (Sept. 5, 2008) -- Scores of fans flocked to the opening of the turf field Friday night at Purchase College.
Over 300 fans attended the pre-game ceremony and later the women's soccer matchup against Husson College on an historic evening in Purchase athletic history. The $2 million turf field, a project that was five years in the making, saw its first intercollegiate action.
Before the game, Purchase Athletic Director Ernie Palmieri addressed the crowd and a host of college officials, welcoming the field into the campus community. He also acknowledged the program's brand new x-country trail.
The new turf field can be used for both men's and women's soccer, lacrosse and football. Purchase President Thomas Schwarz and Palmieri were at the forefront of the project. Provost Damian Fernandez and other dignitaries spoke during the ceremony, which concluded with President Schwarz cutting the red ribbon on the field. FC Westchester Soccer's support was instrumental in the completion of the project.
Orange and blue "Go Panthers" cups were handed out to the first 200 fans in attendance and team mascot Perseus the Panther was on hand for the festivities.
