Tim Clark Freshman,
New Media/Art History
HIT OR MISS
When I was accepted at Purchase, they offered me a job as an Admissions Ambassador, so now I feel like I’m always selling the place. It’s pretty easy to do. I tell my tour groups that Purchase is the kind of college that, well, you either love or you don’t. For most people, it’s usually hit or miss.
People are always saying that Purchase is different—that it’s not your typical big, state university. I happen to like the differences. Everyone’s really friendly here, and we’re all here to learn. There’s no resistance to learning.
I’ve even gotten to like the architecture. It’s just something that I tend to notice, I guess. So many schools have these fake Colonial or Gothic buildings. But Purchase is Minimalist. It took me a little while to get used to, but it has really grown on me.
ALL OVER THE PLACE
I grew up with computers, and I’m really into multi-media. I started making my own videos in high school, and when I decided to come to Purchase, I thought I’d try for a major in Film. Then I happened to see the curriculum for New Media and declared that as my major instead.
Now, I’m planning to add Art History. I took an art history class my senior year in high school and discovered that I’m really a visual learner. It’s easy for me to remember images and artistic styles. And lately, I’ve gotten into still photography, too. I find I can use Surrealism and even Baroque ideas in creating and manipulating my own digital images.
What can I say? I’m a freshman, and my mind’s all over the place right now. The really great thing is that you can pursue all these different interests here. There are so many different majors and combinations of majors.
Ultimately, I’d like to work as a visual effects specialist, maybe not in movies exactly, but putting what I’ve learned into creating images for businesses or something.
SMALL = BEAUTIFUL
Purchase is sort of isolated, that’s true. For a lot of us, a big trip is to the Stop ‘n Shop in White Plains. Still, I really like the size of the place and its laid-back atmosphere.
One of the things that makes Purchase truly different is the unusual mix of majors that we have here. There are all the arts students—dance, music, visual arts, acting—combined with all the liberal arts and sciences majors. It turns out to be a very interesting mix of people.
And, maybe because we’re not such a big university, you get to know a lot more people from different majors than you would someplace else.
DODGEBALL WITH A DIFFERENCE
I’m from Rockland County, just over the Tappan Zee Bridge. So, I can get home on the weekends if I want to. I went to a public high school there, and recently I’ve been surprised to find myself up until 2 a.m. doing homework. Except that I’m programming in Java script or HTML instead of doing math, or history, or some other mundane subject.
For fun, I like to hang out with friends or play video games or ping pong in the Student Center. Or play basketball or handball in the gym.
Believe it or not, I’ve also signed up for Intramural Dodgeball. It’s amazingly structured. There’s going to be a tournament at the end of the season and the winning team will get their names on a plaque and First Place tee shirts. Even the sports we play here are just a little bit different.
