2008 Season Preview

Purchase, NY – Building off the greatest season in women’s tennis history at Purchase College, the Panthers will seek a return trip to the playoffs in what is being considered a rebuilding year, according to head coach Peter Nestel.

Last season the Panthers went 14-3 overall and were 6-1 in the Skyline Conference where they fell in the semifinals against No.2 St. Joseph’s-LI.. The Panthers graduated two seniors, Nicole Wiktor and Margo VanHoy, both of which were key members of the 2007 squad.

“The bulk of this year’s lineup will be built around a small core of returning players mixed with new recruits,” Nestel explained.

Melanie Lopez, the 2007 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year, anchors the core of returners along with standouts Tatyana de Muns, Sara Loe, Jen Cruttenden and Marita Slon. Slon sat out last season with a torn ACL and is currently rehabbing back from injury.

Top newcomers include Colline Lanninga, Alyson Lopez, Tess Willowsynski, and Krystal Cole, who will be competing for open spots in both singles and doubles play.

Also joining the Panthers is new assistant coach Tricia Troiano, who is coming over from Western New England College. “Troiano will serve as an excellent mentor, offering valuable experience having been both a former player and coach,” Nestel said. “The team has set very aggressive goals but is working as hard as they can to meet or exceed these expectations.”
