Note: Transfer students who were enrolled in an Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), College Discovery (CD) or similar special program at their initial college should review the Educational Opportunity Program portion of this website.

Step 1: Submit your completed application

Send the completed application and a check for $40 (payable to "SUNY APC") to:

Note: International Students need to mail the completed application to the Office of Admissions at Purchase College. International Students should review the international application instructions.

Step 2: Request official transcripts (in envelopes sealed by the registrar) from all undergraduate schools attended

*Students with under 30 credits must request for official high school transcripts, SAT/ACT and/or GED scores.

Step 3: Send your visual art portfolio in slide or digital format, the Supplemental Form and Essay, and two letters of recommendation (one artistic and one academic) to the Office of Admissions (See address above).

a) Portfolio of your artwork:  Submit your portfolio in slide or digital format by mail (see guidelines below).

Portfolio Guidelines
Your  portfolio shall consist of no less than twelve (12) or more than twenty (20) examples of your work. Slides (digital or 35mm) must be labeled with your name, title of work, size, date of work, and include a sheet with a short description of each work.

Format:

  • 35mm slides must be presented in a transparent slide sheet.
  • Digital slides should be in JPEG files burned to a CD-R.
  • Motion media (video and animations) should be presented as QuickTime or MPEG movie files burned to a CD-R.

Content:

  • One example in your portfolio should be a self-portrait – any medium.
  • At least two examples of work must be drawings done from direct observation, rather than drawings done from photographs or reproductions. The subject matter of these drawings may be your choice of still life, landscape, interior, human figure, portrait or self-portrait. The balance of the portfolio will be evaluated as a demonstration of both the breadth and depth of your visual interests. Drawings are required of ALL applicants, regardless of major.
  • Detail shots: You may shoot details of particular works if appropriate. Be sure to indicate if a slide is a detail shot.
  • Multiple views: You may wish to include more than one slide of a sculpture, since a single view may not describe it adequately.
  • Photography: Applicants wishing to apply to the photography program should convey their competence in photography by submitting slides of  printed photographs. This is true for both film and digital photography. Original digital files should only be submitted in addition to documentation of the printed result of these images.


b) Supplemental Form and Essay
Submit the Supplemental Form and write a 200-word essay on any topic, in any format of your choice (i.e. artist’s statement, brief narrative, or  non-narrative composition). Please note: If you are applying to Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the School of Art+Design, you do not need to submit the Liberal Arts and Sciences Essay.  We will review the Art+Design Personal Essay for both programs.

c) Letters of recommendation
Two letters:
One letter should address your academic achievements and potential.
The other should speak of your visual and artistic accomplishments and goals.

For non-traditional age applicants, letters from employers are satisfactory.

Although it is not a required part of the application process, portfolio reviews are highly recommended as it allows prospective students to receive direct feedback about their portfolio from a faculty member.
